News update : Pope Leo says he have “no fear” after Donald trump’s attack…
Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s prime minister, called President Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV “unacceptable,” in a statement on Monday. Trump criticized the first American pontiff in a post on social media on Sunday night, responding to the pope’s critiques of Trump administration policies and rhetoric, including the war against Iran. Trump’s comments angered many Catholics and drew widespread rebukes from the international community.
“I find President Trump’s words regarding the Holy Father to be unacceptable,” Meloni said. She added that it was “right and normal that he should call for peace and condemn all forms of war.”
Meloni has cultivated strong ties to Trump but the U.S. war with Iran has turned the relationship something of a political liability for her.
President Trump told reporters outside the Oval Office that he would not apologize for his attacks on Pope Leo, whom he called weak on crime and “terrible for foreign policy” in a lengthy social media post. “I’m just responding to Pope Leo,” he said. “There’s nothing to apologize for. He’s wrong.”
While receiving a McDonald’s food delivery to the Oval Office, the president told reporters that he posted a photo that depicted him as a robed, Jesus-like figure because he thought it had depicted him as a physician.
“I thought it was me as a doctor,” he said, adding that news organizations had misinterpreted the image. “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better, and I do make people better,” he said.
The president said he had taken down the post, which disappeared from his feed late Monday morning.
A Truth Social post that depicts the president as Jesus is no longer visible on President Trump’s account. White House officials did not immediately respond to questions about why it was gone or who had posted it in the first place. His lengthy attack on Pope Leo remains.
